About The Fall of the Republic
The century in which the Roman Republic destroyed itself. In 133 BC a tribune was clubbed to death on the Capitol, and Roman politics never recovered: Marius and Sulla marched on their own city, Spartacus shook Italy, Cicero exposed Catiline, Caesar crossed the Rubicon and fell on the Ides of March. After Actium, Octavian took the name Augustus in 27 BC, and the Republic survived in name only.
