Marcus Porcius Cato, great-grandson of Cato the Censor, was the Republic's most unbending defender, a Stoic famous for his integrity and his opposition to Julius Caesar. When civil war came in 49 BC he joined Pompey, and Plutarch says that from then on he neither cut his hair nor shaved, in mourning for the state. After Pompey's defeat he led the survivors to Africa and took charge of the city of Utica.
In April 46 BC word came that Caesar had crushed the republican army at Thapsus. Cato found ships for those who wished to flee, and would not ask mercy for himself. Plutarch describes his last evening: dinner with friends, where he argued Stoic doctrine; a walk; and then, alone in his room, a reading of Plato's Phaedo, the dialogue on the immortality of the soul. Finding that his sword had been taken away, he demanded it back.
Toward dawn he stabbed himself. His physician tried to save him, but he tore open the wound and died. Plutarch says Caesar regretted that Cato had denied him the chance to spare his life.
The print is lit by a single flame. The oil lamp throws warm light on Cato's hands, his face and the open scroll, while the room around him sinks into darkness; on the right a sword hangs in its scabbard. The tall window behind him opens onto red sky, where legions with eagles and standards march in endless columns through the haze. He does not look up.
