Julius Caesar first crossed to Britain in late summer 55 BC, with two legions, the Seventh and the Tenth, carried in about eighty transport ships. He wanted to see the island for himself and to punish the Britons for helping the Gauls against him. When the fleet reached the coast, he found the enemy drawn up on the cliffs, so close above the shore, he writes, that a spear could be thrown down onto the beach. He sailed on some seven miles to an open shore, usually placed between Walmer and Deal in Kent.
There the ships could not run in. The soldiers, weighed down by their armor, had to jump into deep water and fight their way ashore against Britons who rode their horses and chariots into the surf. In Caesar's own account, it was the eagle-bearer of the Tenth Legion who broke the hesitation: after a prayer for success, he leapt down and shouted that he, at least, would do his duty to the Republic and to his general. The men followed, and the landing was made. Caesar came back the next year with a larger army, but Britain was only conquered under the emperor Claudius, from AD 43.
The print sets the white of the cliffs against a dark sea and a thunderous sky. The cliff face takes up half the picture, streaked and sheer. Along its top run the tiny figures of the Britons and their chariots. Below, the five ships wait in a row, and between them and the shore one small figure walks into the water, holding up the eagle.
