Crossing the Rubicon: an illustration of a lone rider beside a thin pale river on a red plain, with a legion and its eagle standard far behind
Crossing the Rubicon49 BC
The Rubicon, northern Italy · 49 BC

One Rider at the Water’s Edge

In January 49 BC the Senate demanded that Gaius Julius Caesar give up his army and his command in Gaul. Roman law forbade a governor to lead his troops out of his province, and the small river Rubicon, which runs into the Adriatic between Ravenna and Ariminum (modern Rimini), formed part of that border. Which modern stream was the ancient Rubicon is still debated.

Suetonius says Caesar hesitated on the bank and weighed what crossing would cost. By tradition he then said that the die was cast; Plutarch says he spoke it in Greek, a phrase known from the poet Menander. He crossed with a single legion, the Thirteenth, and seized Ariminum. Within weeks Pompey and much of the Senate had left Rome for the east, and the civil war that followed ended only years later, with Pompey dead and Caesar master of the Roman world.

The piece

The print turns that moment into a field of red. Most of the sheet is open sky and open ground, darkening toward black in the upper right corner like weather coming in. The eye drops to the horizon, finds the lone rider in his crested helmet and cloak at the water's edge, and only then notices the army behind him, drawn so small that its eagle is barely a mark. The pale river runs across the picture as thin as a line on a map.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
