In 53 BC Marcus Licinius Crassus, who shared power in Rome with Julius Caesar and Pompey, crossed the Euphrates to make war on the Parthian Empire. Near the town of Carrhae, modern Harran in southeastern Turkey, he met a Parthian army led by the general the Romans knew as Surena. It was made up almost entirely of cavalry: mounted archers and heavily armored lancers.
Plutarch tells that Crassus first spread his line wide, then drew his men into a deep square with twelve cohorts on each side. The square could hold off the lancers, but it made an easy target. The horse archers rode around it and shot without pause, and a train of camels kept them supplied. Crassus' son Publius led a breakout and was killed with most of his men. In the retreat that followed, Crassus himself was killed at a meeting with the Parthians. Plutarch puts the Roman dead at about twenty thousand and the captured at ten thousand. The lost eagles were returned to Augustus by treaty in 20 BC.
The print looks down on the battle from a great height. Everything is gold and dust, swept with long ripples like a desert in wind, and darkening at the top right where the dust is thickest. The legion is a small dark diamond in the very center, its eagle at the forward corner. The riders on the skyline are only specks, and the arrows are fine curved lines falling through the empty air between.
