In 88 BC Lucius Cornelius Sulla was consul and held the command against Mithridates VI of Pontus, the richest prize of the day. The tribune Publius Sulpicius Rufus then pushed a law through the assembly that handed the command to Sulla's rival, Gaius Marius. Sulla went to his army near Nola, in Campania, and told the soldiers what had happened. Afraid of losing the plunder of the East, they urged him to lead them to Rome.
Appian says all his officers but one refused to follow. Sulla marched anyway, with six legions. At the Esquiline Gate the people pelted his men with tiles and stones from the rooftops, and Plutarch says Sulla himself seized a torch and ordered the houses set alight. Marius and Sulpicius were driven out, and Sulpicius was hunted down and killed.
No general had ever taken Rome with a Roman army before. It would not be the last time: Marius returned in force the next year, Sulla came back in 82 BC to make himself dictator, and in 49 BC Julius Caesar followed across the Rubicon.
The print sets the march at ground level in cold, almost gray tones: the column of soldiers along the left edge, the lone rider approaching the closed gate, the towers with their banners and the temples on the hills behind. Above it the great marble head fills the sky, blank stone eyes staring past us as one side of the face drifts away into red smoke.
