Mithridates VI Eupator ruled Pontus, on the southern shore of the Black Sea in what is now northern Turkey, from about 120 BC until 63 BC. Persian by ancestry and Greek by culture, he built an empire around the Black Sea and presented himself as the champion of the Greeks against Rome. Cicero called him the greatest of kings after Alexander. Pliny the Elder says he could speak the languages of all twenty-two peoples he ruled.
In 88 BC his armies swept through Roman Asia and into Greece. Appian says he sent secret orders to the cities of the province to kill all Romans and Italians, with their wives, children and freedmen, on the same day; ancient writers put the dead at 80,000 or more. Lucius Cornelius Sulla drove him out of Greece, and Lucius Licinius Lucullus took much of his kingdom, but it was Pompey the Great who finally broke him. In 63 BC, at Panticapaeum in the Crimea, facing a revolt led by his own son, he tried to take poison. Appian says it failed because he had long guarded himself with antidotes, and he asked a bodyguard to kill him with the sword.
The painting shows him at his height, not his end. He stands at the parapet with the evening light behind his fleet, the diadem tied in his thick hair. A guard in a crested helmet waits at his shoulder. At his other side an old man in white holds out a cup on a dish, and the king does not look at it.
