In 55 BC Germanic tribes had crossed into Gaul, and Caesar decided to show that Rome could cross the Rhine as well. The Ubii, a tribe allied to Rome, offered him boats. Caesar refused. He writes that crossing in boats was neither safe enough nor worthy of himself or of the Roman people, and he resolved to build a bridge instead, though the river was wide, deep and fast.
His description is one of the best-known passages in Roman engineering. Pairs of timbers, sharpened at the foot, were driven into the riverbed at a slant, leaning with the current, and a matching pair was set some forty feet downstream, leaning against it. Great beams were laid between them, and planks and wattle on top. Extra piles braced the structure and guarded it against tree trunks or boats the Germans might send down the river. The work, Caesar says, took ten days. He crossed, spent eighteen days on the far bank burning villages and crops, then came back and broke the bridge down behind him. Where it stood is still debated; many place it near Neuwied or Koblenz. He bridged the Rhine again in 53 BC.
The print is laid out in a cold, deep blue. Wind streaks the whole surface of the river, and dark forest closes the near and far corners. The bridge cuts the picture diagonally from lower left to upper right, a thin pale line on its crossed supports. Halfway along, the soldiers are only a cluster of dark marks under their eagle.
