Caesar at the Rubicon: an illustration of Julius Caesar on horseback at a river's edge with his legion, beneath a giant laureled profile of Caesar
Caesar at the Rubicon49 BC
The Rubicon, northern Italy · 49 BC

The Man Below the Legend

By January 49 BC, Gaius Julius Caesar had spent nine years conquering Gaul. His enemies in the Senate demanded that he give up his army before returning to Rome, where, stripped of his command, he could be prosecuted. Roman law forbade a governor to lead troops beyond his province, and the small river Rubicon, flowing into the Adriatic between Ravenna and Ariminum (modern Rimini), marked part of that border. Which modern stream it was is still argued.

Suetonius says Caesar halted on the bank and weighed what crossing would cost, then went over saying that the die was cast; Plutarch gives the phrase in Greek, a line from the poet Menander. Whatever was said, Caesar seized Ariminum within days with the Thirteenth Legion. Pompey and much of the Senate abandoned Rome, and the civil war that followed ended with Caesar master of the Roman world.

The piece

The print is built in two layers. At the bottom, in fine black line, is the event itself: the rider at the water's edge, the column of soldiers on the left, the far bank with its poplars and low hills. Above, filling two thirds of the sheet, is Caesar's profile in a laurel wreath, the face sharp and calm, the back of the head breaking into drifting dust, as if memory were already at work on him.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
