Spartacus was a Thracian who, according to Appian, had once served with Roman forces, then been taken prisoner and sold as a gladiator. He was held at Capua in a school run by Gnaeus Cornelius Lentulus Batiatus. In 73 BC he and some seventy fellow gladiators, mostly Gauls and Thracians, broke out. Plutarch says they seized knives and spits from a kitchen, captured a wagon of gladiators' weapons on the road, and made their camp on Mount Vesuvius.
Rome first sent a praetor, Gaius Claudius Glaber, who besieged them there; the rebels are said to have climbed down the cliffs on ladders of wild vines and fallen on his camp from behind. Over the next two years runaway slaves flocked to Spartacus, and his army beat several Roman forces, including both consuls of 72 BC, and marched the length of Italy.
In 71 BC Marcus Licinius Crassus finally defeated him in southern Italy. Spartacus died fighting, and his body was never found. Appian says six thousand captured rebels were crucified along the road from Capua to Rome.
The print brings Spartacus close. He fills the lower half of the sheet, every muscle and scar drawn in fine black line, walking out of the picture toward the viewer. His curved blade recalls the Thracian sica. Behind him the arena dissolves into red haze, its arches broken, and on the horizon rises the cone of a mountain like the one where his rising began.
