In January 49 BC Gaius Julius Caesar led his troops across the Rubicon, the stream that marked the edge of his province, and began a civil war against Pompey and the Senate. By tradition he said that the die was cast; Suetonius gives the words in Latin, while Plutarch says Caesar spoke them in Greek. Pompey withdrew to Brundisium and crossed with his army to Greece, leaving Italy to Caesar within weeks.
Caesar first secured Spain, then crossed the Adriatic early in 48 BC. After a setback at Dyrrhachium he met Pompey on the plain of Pharsalus in Thessaly on 9 August 48 BC and routed him. Pompey fled by sea to Egypt, hoping for help from the young king Ptolemy XIII, and was killed as he came ashore near Pelusium. When Caesar reached Alexandria a few days later, he was shown his rival's head. Plutarch says he turned away, and wept when he was handed Pompey's seal ring.
The map tells the chase in two colors on warm sand and teal sea. Caesar's red and Pompey's blue run side by side through Italy and across to Greece, meet at the crossed swords of Pharsalus, then sweep together down the Aegean to the Nile delta. The motto across the top sets the tone: one decision at a small stream, and the whole Roman world in play.
