Gaius Julius Caesar crossed to Britain for the second time in 54 BC, with five legions and some 2,000 cavalry. The tribes of the southeast chose Cassivellaunus, a king whose lands lay north of the Thames, to lead them. Caesar's account in his Gallic War is the earliest detailed description of the Britons at war.
What struck Caesar most were the chariots. He describes how the Britons drove along the whole front hurling javelins, then leapt down to fight on foot while the drivers waited close by to carry them off. They could control their horses at full gallop on steep ground, and, he says, run out along the pole, stand on the yoke and be back in the chariot in an instant. At the Thames he found the far bank defended with sharpened stakes, more of them fixed under the water. The legionaries waded in with only their heads above the surface, and the Britons broke and fled. Cassivellaunus then sent most of his army home and kept about 4,000 charioteers to shadow the Romans, until several tribes went over to Caesar and he agreed to terms.
The painting shows the British side, in rain. The chief, perhaps Cassivellaunus himself, stands tall on the leading chariot, arm thrust toward the river. One warrior balances on the pole between the galloping horses, just as Caesar describes. Others run beside the wheels with shields and spears. Beyond them, the Roman line pushes through the gray water under its standards.
