Quintus Sertorius was one of the ablest Roman soldiers of his generation. He had served under Gaius Marius against the Cimbri and Teutones, and in the civil war he sided with the Marians against Lucius Cornelius Sulla. As Sulla gained the upper hand, Sertorius left for Spain, and from 80 BC, invited by the Lusitanians, he waged a long war there against the armies sent from Rome, led by Quintus Caecilius Metellus Pius and the young Pompey.
Plutarch tells how a Spaniard named Spanus brought him a newborn fawn, pure white, which grew so tame that it followed him everywhere, even to his judgment seat. Sertorius let it be known that the fawn was a gift of Diana and revealed hidden things to him. When he had secret reports that the enemy was moving, he would say the fawn had told him in a dream; when news of a victory came, he would bring the fawn out crowned with flowers and give thanks.
He trained his Spanish allies in Roman ways and founded a school for the sons of their nobles at Osca. In 73 or 72 BC he was murdered at a banquet by his own lieutenant, Marcus Perperna, and the war soon ended.
The print leaves the top half of the sheet as open red sky, so the eye settles on the long column of riders crossing the hillside below. Engraved in fine black line, they stretch from the commander at the left to tiny figures at the far right, with folded mountains and a pale lake beyond. The white fawn walks at the front.
