Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus, Pompey the Great, had been the most powerful man in Rome for a generation. He celebrated three triumphs, for victories in Africa, in Spain and in the East, and Plutarch notes that they were over all three known continents. In 49 BC he led the Senate's side in the civil war against Julius Caesar, and in August 48 BC Caesar destroyed his army at Pharsalus in Greece.
Pompey fled by sea to Egypt, hoping for help from the boy king Ptolemy XIII, whose father he had once supported. The king's advisers, the eunuch Pothinus, the general Achillas and the teacher of rhetoric Theodotus, decided that a dead Pompey was safer than a living one. A small boat came out to his ship off Pelusium carrying Achillas and Lucius Septimius, a Roman who had once served under Pompey.
Plutarch says Pompey said goodbye to his wife Cornelia and went down into the boat, and as he rose to step ashore Septimius stabbed him in the back. His head was later brought to Caesar, who is said to have turned away and wept.
The print divides into two times. Below, in black line on the darkening water, is the present: the ship with its rail of shields, Pompey standing at the curved bow, and the small boat with its rowers pulling toward him. Above, filling the sky, is the past: a triumphal chariot behind rearing horses, a winged Victory holding out a wreath, eagles, standards and crowds waving palms.
