About The Arena
The games of Rome, from the gladiator waiting in the dark beneath the stands to the roar of the Circus Maximus. Most gladiators were slaves, prisoners of war or condemned men, with some free men who signed themselves over to a school. Here too is Spartacus, the gladiator who broke out of a training school at Capua in 73 BC and led the most famous slave revolt in Roman history, the Colosseum and its opening games in AD 80, and the chariot races that carried on in the Hippodrome of Constantinople long after the West had fallen.
