After the breakout at Capua in 73 BC, Spartacus and his companions became the center of a rising that spread across southern Italy. Herdsmen and shepherds, Plutarch says, came over to them, hardy men and quick on their feet, and runaway slaves came in their thousands. The praetors sent against them were beaten one after another. Plutarch says the rebels routed the officers of the praetor Publius Varinius and then Varinius himself, and captured his lictors and his own horse.
Appian says Spartacus divided the spoils equally among his men, which drew many more to him, and that he would not let them buy gold or silver, only iron and bronze for weapons. By 72 BC Appian puts his infantry, at one point, at 120,000, and that year he defeated both consuls. The ancient writers disagree about his aims. Plutarch thought he wanted to lead his followers over the Alps to their homelands, while the army, swollen with success, preferred to plunder Italy.
The painting shows a night in the mountains. Spartacus stands on a rock in a red cloak, one hand raised, his short sword at his side. Around the fire sit his followers, some in captured Roman mail, some in skins, a mother holding her child among them. At the left a smith works at a field forge, and at Spartacus's feet lie the bundled fasces, the legionary shields and a helmet. Behind him a white horse waits, and the valley below glitters with hundreds of fires.
