Before the Games: a painting of a gladiator with bowed head seated in a stone cell, his crested visored helmet and tall shield lit by a window

A gladiators' cell · Before the games

Alone Before the Crowd

Gladiatorial combat in Rome began as part of funeral rites. The first recorded show, according to the summary of Livy's lost Book 16 and to Valerius Maximus, was given in 264 BC by the sons of Junius Brutus Pera at their father's funeral. By the imperial age the games had become great public spectacles. Gladiators were mostly slaves, prisoners of war or condemned men, though some free men signed on for pay and fame. They lived and trained in schools run by a manager, the lanista.

Each gladiator fought as a set type with its own equipment. The murmillo wore a broad-brimmed helmet with a grilled visor and a crest, a padded guard on the sword arm, a greave on the left leg, a large rectangular shield and a short sword. He was often matched against a thraex, who carried a small shield. Bouts were overseen by a referee. A beaten man could appeal for release, and the sponsor of the games, guided by the crowd, decided his fate. Graffiti and tombstones show that many gladiators survived several fights.

The piece

The painting turns the arena inside out. There is no crowd and no sand, only a cell of rough stone with a barred door in shadow. A slanting beam from the high window falls across the helmet and shield, which rest beside him like companions. His own body is half in the light, his head lowered, his hands clasped between his knees. Straw covers the floor. Everything waits for the moment the door opens.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
