The Procession of the Roman Games: a painting of a magistrate in purple leading the Roman Games procession into the Circus Maximus behind four white horses
The Procession of the Roman Games
The Circus Maximus, Rome · September

The Gods Come to the Races

The Roman Games, the Ludi Romani, were the oldest regular games in Rome, held each September in honor of Jupiter Optimus Maximus. Livy traces the Circus Maximus and the first great games to the king Tarquinius Priscus. By the late Republic the festival ran for about two weeks, with plays in the theaters and races in the Circus.

The races opened with the pompa circensis, the circus procession. Dionysius of Halicarnassus, drawing on the early historian Fabius Pictor, describes it winding from the Capitol through the Forum into the Circus. Young men rode at its head. Then came the charioteers and athletes, troupes of dancers in scarlet tunics and bronze helmets, flute and lyre players, and men carrying censers. Last came the images of the gods. Juvenal pictures the presiding magistrate in a tall chariot, dressed in the tunic of Jupiter and an embroidered purple toga. Ovid names the gods as they pass the crowd, Neptune and Minerva among them.

The piece

The painting puts us in the dust of the track, just ahead of the lead horses. The four white horses and the man in purple fill the left, his raised branch set against the packed stands. From there the eye travels right along the procession: the charioteers in their team colors, the musicians, the three dancers in red, and behind them the gilded carriages of the gods rising out of incense smoke. Over it all, the obelisk that Augustus set up in the Circus stands tall above the central barrier.
