Into the Arena: a painting of a gladiator in silhouette walking through a stone tunnel toward a bright, crowded amphitheater under awnings
Into the Arena
The amphitheater · Games day

Out of the Dark, Into the Light

Amphitheaters spread across the Roman world under the empire, from Britain to Syria, but the greatest was the Flavian Amphitheater in Rome, known since the Middle Ages as the Colosseum. The emperor Vespasian began it in the early 70s AD on the site of the lake in Nero's palace grounds, and his son Titus dedicated it in AD 80. Cassius Dio says the opening games lasted a hundred days. Modern estimates of its capacity run to about 50,000.

Gladiators entered the arena through great gates at either end of its long axis. Beneath the Colosseum's floor, a network of corridors, cages and lifts was added under Domitian, so that animals and scenery could appear as if from nowhere. The crowd sat by rank, senators nearest the arena and women and the poor highest up. Above them, sailors are said to have handled the ropes of the velarium, the awning that shaded the seats.

The piece

The painting places us in the tunnel, behind the fighter. The stone walls and vaulted ceiling are almost black, and the only light pours in through the arch ahead. Against it the gladiator is a dark silhouette: crested helmet, arm guard, shield in his left hand, short sword in his right. His long shadow runs back toward us across the worn stone floor. In the doorway, the tiers of spectators climb in gold and cream under red and yellow awnings. The arena is waiting.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
