The Colosseum Hypogeum: an illustration of the corridors beneath the Colosseum, with lift cages, winding drums and one figure in a shaft of light

The Colosseum, Rome · late 1st century AD

The Machinery Beneath the Sand

The Colosseum, properly the Flavian Amphitheater, was begun by the emperor Vespasian around AD 70 and opened by his son Titus in AD 80, with games that Cassius Dio says lasted a hundred days. Dio also reports shows on water in those early years. The underground hypogeum is generally credited to the next emperor, Domitian, and most scholars think the water shows came before it was built.

The hypogeum was a grid of corridors and chambers on two levels, roofed by the wooden floor of the arena, which was covered in sand. Archaeologists of the German Archaeological Institute who studied its walls in the 1990s found traces of some two dozen lifts, worked by capstans that teams of men turned by hand. A lift could raise a caged animal straight up to a trapdoor, so that a wolf or a lion seemed to appear from nowhere. In 2015 a working replica was built and lowered into the Colosseum.

The piece

The print looks down one long corridor. Shafts of light drop through the slats overhead and lie in pale bars across the dirt floor. Lift cages and winding drums frame the near edges, the arches repeat into the distance, and at the end a single figure stands where the light is brightest: one stagehand in a building made for thousands.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
