Gladiatorial combat began, by Roman tradition, as part of funeral rites. The first recorded show in Rome was held in 264 BC by the sons of Decimus Junius Brutus Pera in honor of their dead father. Under the emperors, the games became vast public spectacles paid for by rulers and magistrates and staged in amphitheaters across the Roman world, from the Colosseum in Rome to Nîmes, El Djem and Pompeii.
Gladiators fought in set types, each with its own arms and usual opponents. The murmillo wore a broad-brimmed crested helmet with a grilled visor, carried a large curved rectangular shield and a short sword, and protected his sword arm with a padded guard and one leg with a greave. He was often matched against the thraex or the hoplomachus. Most gladiators were slaves, prisoners of war or condemned men, though some free men signed on.
Because they were expensive to train and keep, gladiators did not usually fight to the death. A beaten fighter could appeal for release, and the man paying for the games, guided by the crowd, decided whether he was spared. Some gladiators' tombstones record long careers of many fights.
The print sets the gladiator dead center and small, a figure of black line on pale sand. Everything else is crowd. The tiers rise from the arena wall to the top edge of the sheet, packed with raised arms and broken only by hanging banners and the barred gates on either side. The eye keeps returning to the one still figure in all that motion.
