Commodus in the Arena: a painting of Emperor Commodus dressed as Hercules in a lion skin, raising a bow in a packed arena, dead ostriches on the sand
Commodus in the ArenaAD 192
Rome · AD 192

The Emperor Who Played Hercules

Commodus became sole emperor in AD 180, at eighteen, on the death of his father Marcus Aurelius. Ancient writers remember him harshly. Cassius Dio, a senator who saw him with his own eyes, and the historian Herodian describe an emperor who left government to favorites, renamed Rome and the months of the year after himself, and had himself portrayed as Hercules, with lion skin and club.

His greatest scandal was the arena. Late in AD 192 he gave public games in which he took part himself. Herodian says he shot ostriches with crescent-headed arrows that took off their heads, so that the birds ran on for a moment headless. Dio, who was there, says Commodus once came up to where the senators sat, holding the head of an ostrich he had killed, and that they chewed laurel leaves from their wreaths to hide their laughter, which could have cost them their lives. On the last day of AD 192 Commodus was strangled in his bath by an athlete named Narcissus, in a plot that reached into his own household.

The piece

The painting shows him at the height of his performance. The lion's head crowns his own, its paws knotted on his chest over a purple tunic, and his bow rises against the striped awnings. Attendants wait with quivers, guards stand at attention, and in the stands the senators in their wreaths sit very still.
