About The Kings & the Early Republic
Rome's first five centuries. By tradition the city was founded in 753 BC and ruled by seven kings, until the last of them was driven out and the Republic was born. Over the next two centuries Rome fought its neighbors one by one and came to rule most of Italy. Here are the stories Romans told about those years, from Brutus's oath to Horatius at the bridge and Cincinnatus at his plow, many of them legend as much as history.
