In 458 BC, according to Livy, the Aequi trapped the consul Lucius Minucius and his army near Mount Algidus, in the hills southeast of Rome. With the state in danger, the Senate turned to Lucius Quinctius Cincinnatus, a former consul then working a farm of four iugera, a few acres, across the Tiber. Livy is careful to say the envoys found him either digging a ditch or plowing; the plow is the version tradition has kept.
He wiped off the dust, put on the toga his wife brought, and was saluted as dictator. He raised a fresh army, marched through the night, surrounded the Aequi, made them pass under the yoke, and returned to Rome in triumph. On the sixteenth day, Livy says, he resigned an office meant to last six months and went home to his fields. Centuries later, Americans saw the same virtue in George Washington. Officers of the Continental Army founded the Society of the Cincinnati in 1783, and the city of Cincinnati, Ohio, took its name from the Society.
The painting stages the meeting at the edge of a freshly turned field. The white togas of the envoys on the left meet the farmer's rough tunic and bare, earth-stained feet, and the pale oxen wait at the plow. From the thatched cottage on the right, Racilia hurries forward with the toga folded over her arm. Behind them, across the river, the town on its hills lies in bright sun.
