When the Etruscan king Lars Porsena of Clusium besieged Rome in the first years of the Republic, the city was soon short of food. According to Livy, a young nobleman named Gaius Mucius won the Senate's leave to cross the Tiber and kill the king himself. He slipped into the Etruscan camp with a dagger under his clothes. But it was payday, the king and his secretary sat side by side dressed much alike, and Mucius struck down the wrong man.
Dragged before the throne, he is said to have warned Porsena that three hundred young Romans had sworn to try the same thing. Then, to show what Romans thought of their bodies, he thrust his right hand into a fire lit for a sacrifice and held it there as it burned. Livy says Porsena, amazed, set him free, and soon afterward made peace and withdrew.
From then on Mucius was known as Scaevola, 'left-handed', a name his family carried for centuries. Most historians treat the tale as a legend that grew up to explain that name.
The print divides the sheet into two worlds. Below, in sharp line, the young man stands upright in tunic and cloak, his arm deep in the flames pouring from a bronze brazier decorated with griffins. Above, half lost in smoke, the king sits enthroned in a laurel crown, eyes wide, hand at his mouth. The fire climbs between them, and the eye follows it from the calm face below to the frightened one above.
