The story of Coriolanus belongs to the first decades of the Republic, and Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, writing nearly five centuries later, tell it as history. Gnaeus Marcius is said to have won his name by storming the Volscian town of Corioli. But he was a proud patrician who, during a famine, wanted to use the grain supply to make the plebs give up their new tribunes, and he was put on trial and driven into exile.
He went over to Rome's enemies, the Volsci, and led their army to within five miles of the city. Envoys from the Senate were turned away, and so were the priests. At last the women of Rome went out to his camp, led by his mother and his wife with his small sons. Livy names them Veturia and Volumnia; Plutarch calls the mother Volumnia. Moved by his mother's reproaches, Coriolanus withdrew.
What became of him is uncertain. Livy gives one version in which the Volsci killed him and another in which he lived on in exile to old age. Rome is said to have built a temple to Fortuna Muliebris, the Fortune of Women, on the spot. Shakespeare made the story into one of his last tragedies.
The print stages the meeting as a standoff across open ground. On the left, small against the walls and temples of the city, stand the veiled women, the mother in front with her hands open. On the right the army runs back in a long diagonal of spears, banners and shields, its commander at the front. Between them the red earth is empty, and that gap is where the story turns.
