Herodian, who lived through these events, wrote that in a period of sixty years more men held imperial power than would seem possible in so short a time. AD 238 was the height of it. Maximinus Thrax, said to have been a shepherd boy in Thrace, had been hailed by the army in 235 and never came to Rome. A revolt at Thysdrus raised the proconsul of Africa, Gordian I, aged about eighty, with his son Gordian II. The Senate recognized them and declared Maximinus a public enemy. About three weeks later both were dead: the son in battle, the father by his own hand.
The Senate then elected two elderly senators, Pupienus and Balbinus, to rule together, and at the crowd's demand named Gordian I's grandson, Gordian III, as Caesar. Maximinus was killed by his own troops at the siege of Aquileia, and his head was brought to Pupienus at Ravenna. In July or August the Guard killed Pupienus and Balbinus during the Capitoline Games and hailed Gordian III sole emperor. He reigned until 244, when he died on campaign against Persia.
The dates of 238 are disputed. The plate follows the later chronology, which best fits dated papyri from Egypt; an earlier one puts each event two or three months sooner, so only months are given. On the chart, the eye runs down Maximinus's long red band, past the Gordians' brief ochre block and the green band of the two senators, to Gordian III's blue band, the one that carries on beyond the year.
