Nero's fall in June AD 68 ended the line of Augustus and left the throne to whoever could hold it. Servius Sulpicius Galba, governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, was recognized by the Senate as Nero fell. He lost the loyalty of the Praetorian Guard, and on 15 January 69 he was murdered in the Forum. Marcus Salvius Otho, once Nero's friend, was made emperor by the Guard the same day.
The Rhine legions had already chosen their own man. Aulus Vitellius, commander of the army of Lower Germany, was hailed at Cologne on 2 January. His army beat Otho's at Bedriacum in April, Otho took his own life, and the Senate recognized Vitellius. On 1 July the legions in Egypt hailed Titus Flavius Vespasianus, commander of the war in Judaea. His army won at Cremona in October and took Rome in December; Vitellius was killed in the city, and the Senate recognized Vespasian. He ruled for ten years and died a natural death in AD 79.
Tacitus, who lived through these years, drew the lesson in his Histories: the secret of empire was out, and an emperor could be made elsewhere than at Rome. The plate prints his remark beneath the chart. Solid bands mark recognition by the Senate and hatched bands acclamation by an army alone. The eye moves left to right across the columns as the year runs down the page, from Galba's short gold bar to Vespasian's blue band pointing on toward AD 79.
