Commodus was murdered on the last night of AD 192. The Praetorian Guard hailed Publius Helvius Pertinax, a general of Marcus Aurelius aged 66, and the Senate recognized him on 1 January. He lasted less than three months: on 28 March soldiers of the Guard killed him in the palace. The Guard then sold the throne. Marcus Didius Julianus, a rich senator, outbid Pertinax's father-in-law with an offer of 25,000 sesterces a soldier. Cassius Dio, who sat in the Senate in Rome that year, wrote that the City and its whole empire were auctioned off as if in a market.
The armies of the provinces did not accept the sale. Pescennius Niger, governor of Syria, was hailed by the armies of the East in April. Lucius Septimius Severus, governor of Upper Pannonia, was hailed by the legions at Carnuntum on 9 April. Severus offered Clodius Albinus, governor of Britain, the junior title of Caesar; the plate counts Albinus among the five, though in 193 he held only that title. In June the Senate deposed Julianus, who was killed in the palace, and recognized Severus. Niger was defeated at Issus in 194 and beheaded as he fled. Albinus claimed the title Augustus in 195 or 196 and was defeated near Lugdunum in February 197; he took his own life, says Dio.
The plate turns a chaotic year into a clear chart. Solid bands mark recognition by the Senate, hatched bands an acclamation without it, and stippled bands the junior title of Caesar. The eye runs down the lanes from Pertinax's short ochre bar to Severus's long red one, which runs on past 197 and ends in an arrow.
