The Wolf of Rome: a painting of Roman legionaries with an eagle standard marching through a misty pine forest beneath a giant wolf formed of cloud
The Wolf of Rome
A forest road · Night

The Guardian in the Mist

Romans told that their city began with a wolf. According to Livy, the infant twins Romulus and Remus were left beside the flooded Tiber and found by a she-wolf, who nursed them until the shepherd Faustulus took them in. Livy himself reports a more skeptical version: that lupa, she-wolf, was also slang for a prostitute, and that the shepherd's wife may lie behind the tale. Either way, the wolf and twins became one of the most familiar images of Rome, shown on coins and in bronze.

The wolf also belonged to Mars, the father of the twins in the legend and the god of war. Pliny the Elder says that the legions once carried five animal standards: the eagle, the wolf, the minotaur, the horse and the boar. In 104 BC, in his second consulship, Gaius Marius made the eagle the single standard of every legion. The wolf never left the Roman imagination.

The piece

The painting sets a real scene beneath a vision. Below, legionaries tramp along a muddy track between tall pines and dark rocks, the eagle rising above their helmets. Above, mist and moonlight form the outline of a wolf striding over the forest, its eye the moon itself. The two halves of the picture answer each other. The men are walking forward into the dark, and the wolf goes with them.
