Capri belonged to the city of Naples until Augustus took it for himself and gave Naples the larger island of Aenaria, modern Ischia, in exchange. His successor Tiberius Caesar Augustus, emperor from AD 14 to 37, retired there in AD 27 and never lived in Rome again. Tacitus says he occupied twelve villas on the island. Suetonius says he liked it because it could be reached at only one small landing place, with sheer cliffs everywhere else.
The largest of these villas, known today as Villa Jovis, the villa of Jupiter, crowns the high northeastern headland of the island. Since Capri had no springs, its center was given over to great cisterns for rainwater. Suetonius reports that after the fall of his minister Sejanus in AD 31, Tiberius did not leave the Villa Jovis for nine months. The ancient writers, never kind to him, filled his island years with dark stories; the ruins themselves speak mostly of water, views and engineering.
The picture sets the view inside a frame of pale columns and a vine pergola heavy with dark grapes. The mosaic floor and pierced balustrade hold the foreground. Past them the eye drops to the sea and travels out across it, from sail to sail, to the volcano on the far shore. Little in the picture is dark except the water and the grapes.
