Winged Victory Over the Legions
Victoria was the Roman form of the Greek Nike, and her cult grew with Rome's wars. Livy records that the consul Lucius Postumius Megellus dedicated a temple to her on the Palatine in 294 BC, during the wars against the Samnites. The palm she carries also came from Greece: Livy says that in 293 BC winners at the Roman games were first given palms, following the Greek custom.
Her most famous image in Rome was a statue in the Senate House. Augustus set it up there after his victory at Actium, and senators offered incense and wine at its altar before their meetings. Four centuries later, that altar became the center of a famous dispute between the old religion and the new. Christian emperors had it removed, and in AD 384 the senator Quintus Aurelius Symmachus pleaded for its return. Ambrose, bishop of Milan, argued against him, and the altar was never restored for good.
The piece
The illustration is almost symmetrical. The wings fill the width of the sheet, feather after feather patterned in vermilion, cobalt and gold, with meander and wave borders running along them. Loose feathers and gold leaves drift down on both sides. The goddess is pale and quiet at the center, her eyes lowered toward the wreath. Far below, the soldiers stand in a single thin line with their red shields, and the small eagle standard sits directly beneath her.
