The Vestals: a painting of Vestal Virgins in white veils carrying water jars up steps toward the round Temple of Vesta with its sacred fire
The Vestals
The Roman Forum · Temple of Vesta

Keepers of Rome's Sacred Fire

The Romans believed the cult of Vesta was as old as their city. Livy credits Numa Pompilius with establishing the Vestals, and their round temple in the Forum, beside the Regia, held no statue of the goddess, only the fire. If the flame went out, the Vestal responsible was punished, and the city took it as a grave omen.

A Vestal entered the order between the ages of six and ten, according to Aulus Gellius, and Plutarch says she served for thirty years: ten learning, ten performing the rites, ten teaching. She was freed from her father's authority, could make a will, and had a place of honor at the games. From 42 BC, Cassius Dio records, each Vestal was attended by a lictor in public. Breaking the vow of chastity was punished by burial alive, and the sources record the penalty being carried out several times. The order ended in the 390s AD, after the emperors withdrew public support from the old cults.

The piece

The painting climbs. From the Vestal nearest us, who glances back over her shoulder with her jar raised, the eye follows the line of white veils up the wet steps, past the lictor with his bundle of rods, to the glowing ring of columns where the fire burns. Onlookers in dark cloaks stand aside with heads bowed, and the city's temples and statues fade into the morning fog.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
