The Flame of Vesta: an illustration of a veiled Vestal priestess at an altar as the sacred flame of Vesta rises in vermilion, gold and cobalt

The Fire That Must Never Die

The fire of Vesta stood for the life of the Roman state, and its keepers were among the most honored women in Rome. Six Vestal Virgins served the goddess. Chosen as girls, they served for thirty years, according to Plutarch and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, and they held privileges no other Roman women had. A Vestal who let the fire go out was whipped. One who broke her vow of chastity was buried alive.

Each year on March 1, the old start of the Roman year, the fire was renewed, as Macrobius records. In June, at the Vestalia, the temple's storeroom was opened to women, and Ovid recalls seeing a Roman matron walk barefoot to the shrine. The Greeks honored the same goddess as Hestia, but she never held anything like Vesta's place in public life. In the 380s and 390s AD, the emperors Gratian and Theodosius I ended state support for the old cults, and by most accounts the fire went out around AD 394.

The piece

The design is a single rising movement. The priestess stands small and still in the lower left, her long veil trailing behind her. The fire leaves the bowl as real flame and, as it climbs, turns into ornament: ribbons of vermilion, gold and cobalt, laurel sprays, dotted borders and rosettes, the patterns of a mosaic floor lifted into the sky. Sparks drift from its edges across the bare cream ground.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
