Venus seems to have begun as an Italian goddess of gardens, charm and growth before Romans identified her with the Greek Aphrodite. With Aphrodite came her stories. The golden apple she holds comes from the Greek tale of the Judgment of Paris, who gave it to her as the most beautiful of the goddesses. Her birth from the foam of the sea is told by the Greek poet Hesiod.
Rome added a story of its own. In Virgil's Aeneid, Venus is the mother of Aeneas, who escapes burning Troy and leads his people to Italy, and it is her doves that guide him to the golden bough before he enters the underworld. Through Aeneas' son Iulus, the Julian family traced its line back to her. Julius Caesar vowed a temple to Venus Genetrix, Venus the Mother, before the Battle of Pharsalus and dedicated it in his new forum in 46 BC. The poet Lucretius opened his great poem on nature with a hymn to her as mother of the children of Aeneas.
The illustration flows from upper left to lower right. The goddess stands tall and pale on the dark rocks, her gaze turned toward the doves. Behind her the mantle widens into a river of red roses, white blossoms, gold shells and meander borders, then dissolves into cobalt water and white foam dotted like a mosaic. Rose petals blow across the sky toward a small temple on a distant headland, and a single white scallop shell lies at her feet.
