Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus wrote his Lives of the Caesars in the early second century AD. For a time he served as secretary to the emperor Hadrian. His twelve biographies run from Julius Caesar to Domitian, and they have shaped the popular picture of the first emperors ever since: the scandals, the omens, the last words.
Julius Caesar was never emperor. He first held the dictatorship in 49 BC and was stabbed to death at a meeting of the Senate on the Ides of March, 44 BC. Suetonius begins with him all the same. Augustus died at Nola, aged 75, and Tiberius at Misenum, aged 77, though some said he was smothered. Claudius died suddenly, and ancient writers say he was poisoned. Vespasian died of illness and is said to have declared that an emperor should die standing. Titus died of a fever after a reign of just over two years, and Domitian was stabbed in a palace plot, after which the Senate condemned his memory.
The plate is laid out like a carved marble tablet, with the twelve portraits cut in low relief in four rows of three. Julius Caesar's name is set apart in dark letters; the eleven emperors are named in red. Read it left to right, top to bottom, and it becomes the story of Rome's first rulers told through their endings. A short note at the foot introduces Suetonius and his book, and the source line adds Tacitus and Cassius Dio.
