A Hundred Feet of White Marble
Trajan's Column was dedicated in May AD 113 in the Forum of Trajan, the last and largest of Rome's imperial forums. The column itself measures 100 Roman feet, about 30 meters, and is built from huge drums of white Luna marble from the quarries at Carrara. The inscription on its base is usually read as saying that the column shows how high the ground once stood before it was cut away to make room for the forum.
A carved frieze winds around the shaft from bottom to top, telling the story of Trajan's Dacian Wars scene by scene: legionaries marching, building and fighting, the emperor speaking to his army, and the end of the Dacian king Decebalus. The column stood in a small courtyard between two libraries, and the upper reliefs were probably best seen from their upper floors. A bronze statue of Trajan crowned it until it was lost in the Middle Ages. Since 1587 a statue of Saint Peter has stood in its place.
The piece
The print strips the monument back to its outline. There is no forum and no library, only a field of deep terracotta red, darkening at the upper left, and the white column standing in it like a single line of chalk. A faint spiral climbs the shaft, the statue is a small dark shape against the sky, and a long shadow runs away to the right along the ground. At the very foot, one person in a dark robe stands looking up.
