Thusnelda: a painting of Thusnelda with bound wrists leading her small son through a Roman triumph, captives and soldiers around her

Rome · AD 17

Walking Unbowed Through Rome

Thusnelda was the daughter of Segestes, a Cheruscan noble loyal to Rome. Against her father's will she married Arminius, the man who destroyed three Roman legions in the Teutoburg Forest in AD 9. In AD 15, during the German campaigns of Germanicus, Segestes was besieged by Arminius' followers and called on the Romans to rescue him. Thusnelda was among those he handed over. Tacitus describes her as more her husband's wife than her father's daughter: she did not weep or plead, but stood with her hands clasped, looking down at the child she was carrying.

That child, Thumelicus, was born in Roman captivity. On 26 May AD 17, Germanicus celebrated his triumph over the Cherusci, the Chatti, the Angrivarii and the other peoples as far as the Elbe. The geographer Strabo lists the captives led through Rome: Thusnelda and her three-year-old son, her brother Segimundus and other nobles, while Segestes looked on as an honored guest. Arminius was killed by his own people a few years later. Tacitus promised to tell the fate of Thumelicus later in his work, but that part is lost.

The piece

The painting holds the procession still around her. She walks toward us on the wet stones, her braid over her shoulder, her bound hands holding her son's. The boy looks out at us with her steadiness. Around them, the soldiers keep their eyes forward and the men behind look at the ground. Only the crowd on the steps and the gilded standards are celebrating.
