Diocletian came to power in AD 284. To share the burden of rule he made Maximian his fellow Augustus, and in 293 each of them took a Caesar: Constantius and Galerius. The plate shows how the four were bound by marriage. Galerius married Diocletian's daughter Valeria; Constantius married Theodora, whom the ancient sources call Maximian's daughter or stepdaughter. Constantine's mother, Helena, was Constantius's wife or concubine; the sources differ, and the plate joins her to him with a parents' bracket rather than a marriage line.
Diocletian and Maximian abdicated in 305, and the arrangement soon broke apart. Constantine was proclaimed at York in 306, and Maxentius, Maximian's son, was acclaimed at Rome the same year; Constantine defeated him at the Milvian Bridge in 312. Licinius, who had married Constantine's half-sister Constantia, was defeated in 324 and executed in 325. Constantine's three surviving sons divided the empire in 337. Their cousin Julian, son of Constantine's half-brother Julius Constantius, became sole ruler in 361 and died of a wound in Persia in 363.
The plate is cut like an inscription in white marble, with the names of those who held the title Augustus in red and everyone else in dark letters. The row of portraits reads left to right as a sequence of reigns; the tree below reads as a family, with Constantine at its center. Look for Maximian in the lion-skin of Hercules, as on his gold coins, and for the pearl diadems of Constantius II and Julian at the right.
