Tibur, modern Tivoli, sits on the hills about 30 kilometers east of Rome, where the river Anio, today the Aniene, drops out of the mountains in a series of falls. Wealthy Romans built villas on its slopes for the cool air and the sound of water. The poet Horace, who had a farm in the Sabine hills nearby, praised the headlong Anio, the grove of Tiburnus and the orchards watered by its streams.
On the rock of the old town stand two temples of the early first century BC. The round one, with Corinthian columns and a frieze of ox skulls hung with garlands, is traditionally called the Temple of Vesta, though some scholars think it honored the Sibyl of Tibur or Hercules. The rectangular Ionic temple beside it is just as uncertain. Ten of the round temple's columns still stand. From the eighteenth century it became one of the most painted ruins in Italy, and the architect John Soane copied its order for a corner of the Bank of England.
The picture is made in layers. A curved balustrade and a band of mosaic hold us on the terrace. Below, the falls and the white spray fill the middle of the sheet. Above them all, catching the sun, sits the temple, crowned here with a tiled roof that the ruin has long lost. The eye climbs from the stone at our feet to the stone on the cliff.
