The Road Scroll: an illustration of a long Roman road map in the style of the Peutinger Table, with Rome enthroned in a medallion and roads radiating
The Road Scrollc. 4th century AD
The Peutinger Table · c. 4th century AD

Every Road Starts at the Throne

The Tabula Peutingeriana, or Peutinger Table, is the only map of the Roman road network across the whole empire to survive. What exists today is a medieval copy made around 1200 on a parchment roll almost seven meters long and only about a third of a meter high. Its Roman source is usually dated to the fourth century AD, perhaps drawing on earlier maps. The roll takes its name from Konrad Peutinger, the Augsburg scholar who inherited it in the early 1500s, and it is kept in the Austrian National Library in Vienna.

The map was never meant to show true shapes. Coastlines and countries are squeezed into a narrow band so that the roads, towns and distances fit. It marks thousands of names, from Britain to India, with symbols for towns, baths, harbors and temples. Rome, Constantinople and Antioch appear as enthroned figures, and Rome sits at the center of a star of roads, as it stood at the center of the empire.

The piece

This design takes the same idea and gives it room to breathe. Bands of pale sand and sea green run across the sheet, threaded with fine red roads and dotted with tiny buildings. The eye goes straight to the gold medallion of Rome, then follows any road outward, from stop to stop, into the long, strange shapes of the Roman world.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
