Varro lists Sol among the gods to whom the Sabine king Titus Tatius is said to have vowed altars in Rome, and an old shrine of the Sun stood on the Quirinal Hill. Sol was closely tied to chariot racing. Tacitus mentions an ancient temple of Sol at the Circus Maximus, and in 10 BC Augustus set up an Egyptian obelisk in the Circus and dedicated it to the Sun.
The Greeks called the sun god Helios, and Roman poets borrowed his stories. Ovid's tale of Phaethon, the son who begged to drive his father's chariot and set the world on fire, is a Greek myth told in Latin. Sol's greatest moment in Rome came much later. In AD 274, after reuniting the empire, Aurelian dedicated a temple to Sol Invictus and created a new college of priests to serve him. Constantine honored the Unconquered Sun on his coins in the early years of his reign, before Christian signs took its place.
The illustration reads from left to right, like the sun's own path. A long ribbon of vermilion, gold and cobalt streams out behind the chariot, carrying small rising suns, waves and meander borders, and it breaks up into a spray of dots at the left edge. The chariot is gold, its wheel a sunburst. Below the bright sky, the city is drawn in a single dark blue: temples on the hills, cypresses, a line of arches and a river catching the first light.
