In the first two centuries AD, the Roman Empire traded with lands it knew only from afar. The Romans called the Chinese the Seres, the silk people, and their country Serica. Silk reached the Mediterranean through many hands, along the caravan routes across Parthia and Central Asia that modern writers call the Silk Road. The Chinese, in turn, knew Rome as Daqin. The Book of the Later Han records envoys claiming to come from the king of Daqin, Andun, often taken to be Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, arriving by sea in AD 166.
The sea route was faster and busier. Greek and Egyptian merchants sailed down the Red Sea from Egyptian ports and, using the monsoon winds, crossed the open ocean to India. Strabo says that in his day as many as 120 ships were sailing from Myos Hormos to India. A merchant's handbook, the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea, lists the ports and the goods, pepper above all. Pliny the Elder complained that India, China and Arabia drained the empire of a hundred million sesterces every year.
The map is drawn in the manner of an old atlas, with mountains in fine pen and seas in close blue hatching. Rome, Parthia, India and Serica are each washed in their own color, red, ochre, green and blue. The golden dotted routes, one marked with camels and one with ships, carry the eye from the left edge of the sheet to the far right.
