The Siege of Alesia: an illustration of Alesia from above, the hill town ringed by Caesar's two red siege lines, with Gallic attacks in blue arrows

Caesar's Ring Around Vercingetorix

The Siege of Alesia was the climax of Gaius Julius Caesar's war in Gaul. In 52 BC the Arvernian chief Vercingetorix, leader of a revolt that had united much of Gaul, withdrew with his army, which Caesar puts at 80,000 men, into the hilltop town of Alesia, usually identified with Mont Auxois near Alise-Sainte-Reine in Burgundy.

Caesar describes the siege in Book VII of The Gallic War. An inner line about 11 Roman miles long, with 23 forts, shut the town in. When he learned that a great Gallic relief army was coming, he built a second line, 14 Roman miles around, facing outward. His legions then held both at once. The heaviest attack struck a camp on poor ground beneath a hill on the north side. Caesar sent Titus Labienus with cohorts, then came himself, and sent cavalry around the outer works to take the attackers from behind. The relief army broke, and Vercingetorix gave himself up.

The piece

The plate colors the valley in soft greens and harvest gold, with forests on the hills and fields in the plain. Two bold red lines carry the story: the inner ring studded with small square forts, the outer ring ticked like a palisade. Camps sit in the land between. Three numbered notes at the foot walk the viewer through the siege, from the first ring to the final charge.

Which size?

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
