Lucius Septimius Severus was born in AD 145 at Leptis Magna, on the coast of today's Libya. He was governor of Upper Pannonia when the emperor Pertinax was murdered by the Praetorian Guard in March AD 193, and the throne was then sold to Didius Julianus. Severus' legions on the Danube proclaimed him emperor, and he marched on Rome. Over the next four years he defeated two more rivals, Pescennius Niger in the East and Clodius Albinus in Gaul.
He was above all a soldier-emperor. He raised the army's pay, created new legions and stationed one of them near Rome. His Parthian campaign took him to Ctesiphon, and the senator and historian Cassius Dio describes how he twice besieged the desert city of Hatra without taking it. He also rebuilt his hometown of Leptis Magna on a grand scale. He died at Eboracum, today's York, in February AD 211, while campaigning in Scotland. Dio reports that on his deathbed he told his sons to agree with each other, enrich the soldiers and despise everyone else.
The painting places him close to us on a rise above the line of march, as if he has stepped aside to watch his army pass. His face, turned toward the distance, is the still point among all the movement. The gilded cuirass, with its Medusa head and relief figures, catches the hard desert light. Behind him the march runs away in long lines of standards, shields and camels, toward the city on its hill and the river below.
