In spring 218 BC Hannibal Barca led his army north from New Carthage, the city his family had founded on the coast of Spain. Polybius says he crossed the Pyrenees with about 50,000 infantry and 9,000 cavalry, along with his war elephants. He crossed the Rhône and then the Alps late in the year, losing men to cold, rockfalls and attacks by mountain tribes. Polybius puts the army that came down into Italy at 20,000 infantry and no more than 6,000 cavalry.
In Italy he beat the Romans at the Trebia in December 218 BC and destroyed a consular army in an ambush at Lake Trasimene in 217 BC. At Cannae in Apulia, in August 216 BC, he surrounded a far larger Roman army and cut it to pieces; ancient writers put the Roman dead at between about 50,000 and 70,000. Yet Rome would not make peace. Publius Cornelius Scipio took New Carthage in 209 BC, drove Carthage out of Spain, and defeated Hannibal himself at Zama in North Africa in 202 BC.
The map lays the campaign out like a general's briefing. The red of Rome and the purple of Carthage face each other across the sea, while Hannibal's line goes the long way round by land. It climbs into the gray hatching of the Alps, passes the little elephant, then turns down the length of Italy to the last crossed swords at Cannae.
