Sarmatian Riders: a painting of Sarmatian cataphracts in scale armor on armored horses riding across grassland with lances and a dragon standard
Sarmatian Riders
The Danube frontier · 1st–3rd century AD

Armored Horsemen of the Steppe

The Sarmatians were a group of Iranian-speaking nomadic peoples who moved west across the steppes in the last centuries BC. By the first century AD, tribes such as the Roxolani and the Iazyges lived along Rome's Danube frontier, the Iazyges on the plain between the Danube and the Tisza in modern Hungary. Tacitus describes Roxolani nobles in AD 69 armored in iron plates or hardened leather and fighting with long lances and very long swords, hard to stop in a charge but helpless once unhorsed.

The Iazyges fought Rome in the Marcomannic Wars. In AD 175, according to Cassius Dio, they made peace with Marcus Aurelius and handed over 8,000 cavalry, of whom 5,500 were sent to Britain. Sarmatian troopers are still recorded at Ribchester in Lancashire generations later. The riders on Trajan's Column wear scale armor covering both man and horse, and the dragon standard, a metal head trailing a cloth tail that filled with wind, was later carried by Roman cavalry too, as Arrian describes.

The piece

The painting lines the column up on a long diagonal into the distance. The leading rider, closest to us, sits easy in the saddle, his lance upright and his plumed helmet catching the light. His horse wears a full coat of scale down to the knees. Behind him the standard-bearer lifts the dragon high, its red tail cracking across the clouds. The rest of the column fades back into the grass and the pale horizon.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
