San Vitale was begun under the Ostrogothic kings of Italy, paid for by a local banker named Julianus Argentarius, and finished after Justinian's armies took Ravenna in 540. It was consecrated by Archbishop Maximian around 547. Its eight-sided interior is famous for its mosaics, above all two panels on either side of the apse: Justinian with clergy, officials and guards, and opposite him the empress Theodora with her court, holding a golden chalice as an offering.
Mosaicists generally worked from the top down, a small section at a time. A guiding drawing was laid out on a rough base coat, then a fine setting bed was spread over only as much as could be finished before it hardened. Into it the workers pressed tesserae of colored stone and glass, including glass backed with gold leaf, often set at slight angles so they would catch the light. Their names are not recorded.
The painting shows its version of the Theodora panel nearly done. She stands at the center in imperial purple, crowned and haloed, with attendants in red, white and green around her, all set against a shimmering gold ground. Three craftsmen work at different stages: one pressing gold cubes, one bent over the hem of a robe, one drawing the last figures in red outline on bare plaster. Trays of colored tesserae sit on the planks between them, and light from the high window falls across the whole surface.
