The Dance of the Salii: a painting of the Salii, priests of Mars in pointed caps and bronze armor, dancing down a crowded street with bronze shields
The Dance of the Salii
Rome · The month of March

The Shields That Fell from Heaven

The Salii were among the oldest priesthoods in Rome, and Roman tradition credited their founding to Numa Pompilius, the city's second king. There were two colleges of twelve: the Salii Palatini, devoted to Mars, and the Salii Collini, linked to Quirinus and said to have been added by King Tullus Hostilius. Their members were young men of patrician birth whose parents were both living.

The Romans took their name from salire, to leap. Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus describe their dress: an embroidered tunic, a bronze breastplate, a cloak with a purple border, and on the head the apex, a tall cap rising to a point. Each carried one of the ancilia, the figure-eight shields, and struck it as he danced. Their great processions came in March, the month of Mars and the old start of the campaigning season, and they danced again in October when the season closed. Their feasts became proverbial for richness; Horace speaks of a banquet fit for the Salii.

The piece

The painting looks straight down the street into the dance. The lead priest is caught in mid-leap, one knee high, mouth open in song, and the others follow him out of the smoke in a wedge of white caps and bronze. Onlookers crowd the balconies hung with red and white cloth, a father lifts his son to see, and at the far end of the street a temple waits in the haze.

Sizes are the artwork's. Frames and hangers add a little around the edge.

Above a sofa or bed, art looks best at about two-thirds of the furniture's width, hung 8 to 10 inches above it.
