Romulus Augustulus was raised to the throne in October 475 by his father, Orestes, a general who had driven out the emperor Julius Nepos. The boy was still a youth, perhaps in his early teens. His name joined the founder of Rome to the first emperor, and Romans mocked it with the diminutive Augustulus, the little Augustus.
Real power lay with the army in Italy, by now largely made up of Germanic soldiers. When Orestes refused their demand for land, they turned to one of their officers, Odoacer. On 28 August 476 Orestes was captured and killed at Placentia, and soon afterward Odoacer took Ravenna. According to the chronicle known as the Anonymus Valesianus, he took pity on Romulus because of his youth and good looks, granted him an income of six thousand gold coins, and sent him to live with relatives in Campania.
Odoacer did not take the title of emperor. By the account of the historian Malchus, the Senate sent envoys to the eastern emperor Zeno in Constantinople to say that one emperor was enough for both halves of the empire, and the imperial insignia were sent east. Odoacer ruled Italy as king.
The painting is all stillness. Light falls from the tall windows on the left onto the marble table, the purple and the gold. The empty throne waits at the back beneath a blue half-dome sown with stars. The boy looks down; the general looks at him.
